Thinking of making a move to Calgary? According to a recent report released by the Economist Intelligence Unit, you might be on to something. The report, released on Tuesday August 17, shows Calgary remains high in the rankings of 140 cities surveyed. According to the report, cities that fared best tended to be mid-sized cities with a lower population density, in wealthier countries.

Calgary received top marks in stability, health care and education, but dropped in the rankings when it came to culture and environment — including weather. Although it’s no surprise that our difficult winters may be seen a drawback, they may have overlooked all the activities that help locals deal with the freeze. Our access to the mountains offers residents plenty of outdoor opportunities including access to some of the best ski resorts in North America. And for those who aren’t as adventurous, the City offers a number of fun urban activities including skating at Olympic Plaza to ski lessons at Canada Olympic Park.

And although both Vancouver and Toronto placed slightly ahead of Calgary, no one can argue that our city truly is the hub of commercial growth in Canada. The economic opportunities in Calgary clearly set us ahead of the pack.

So who made the top 10?

  1. Melbourne (Australia)
  2. Vienna (Austria)
  3. Vancouver (Canada)
  4. Toronto (Canada)
  5. Calgary (Canada) *
  6. Adelaide (Australia) *
  7. Sydney (Australia)
  8. Helsinki (Finland)
  9. Perth (Australia)
  10. Auckland (New Zealand)
